Check Your Amex Gift Card Balance
Always check your balance at amexgiftcard.com before visiting a gas station to avoid unexpected declines at the pump.
How to Use Your Amex Gift Card at a Gas Station
1
Check Your Balance Before You Go
Visit the amexgiftcard.com balance check portal and note your exact available balance before heading to the gas station. Having this number on hand is critical for the steps that follow.
2
Understand the Authorization Hold
Be aware that some pay-at-pump terminals may place a temporary authorization hold of up to $175 (or your full card balance, whichever is less) when you insert or tap your card at the pump. This hold is not a charge — it is released once the final transaction settles — but it can tie up your funds for several business days.
3
Prepay Inside to Avoid the Hold
To sidestep the large hold entirely, go inside the station and hand your card directly to the attendant. Tell them how much fuel you want to prepay (up to your available balance). This method charges only the exact amount you specify and avoids the pump’s automatic hold.
4
If Paying at the Pump
If you choose to pay at the pump, insert or tap your card and select Credit when prompted. Be prepared for the hold described in Step 2, and ensure your balance is well above the amount of fuel you intend to purchase.
5
Wait for the Transaction to Settle
After fueling, the actual charge will post to your card within a few business days. Any funds held above the actual purchase amount will be released back to your available balance once the transaction fully settles.
